May Day

Blossomire, Russian Princess

It is said that this most happy of all occasions originated in Roman Times, in celebration of the coming of warm days and Spring blossoms, after a long cold winter.

Light and life, Love and laughter following the sombre darker days just gone.

Early morning, on every 1st of May, the people would decorate their houses inside and out with garlands of flowers, believing it brought good luck. They organised Funfairs, Competitions, Processions, much Dancing, and delicious refreshments; a holiday of fun for the day. Highlights were the dancing with coloured ribbons round a Maypole, and the choosing and crowning of the prettiest girl to be May Queen of the Year.

Flora, Goddess of Flowers and fruit was the originally chosen figurehead to symbolise the May Queen. Today, in our special world of Cats, it is Blossomire, (Russian Princess) who wears the crown - just for one day.

Traditionally the May Queen does not take part in the Games or Dancing. This is as well for Blossomire, who certainly prefers to observe rather than participate in such activities.

She is also proud to announce that she has been chosen to be Cover Girl for the 2017 Calendar, published this Autumn by Flame Tree Publishing (her loving owners.) view Flame Tree's 2016 calendar

For all this fame and acknowledgement , all she has had to do is sit majestically amongst her favourite flowers at home, and watch it all going on. Another excuse for her to wear her little crown. It is what she does every day anyway; all sunny days are May Day to her.
